Convex Optimisation Model for Ship Speed Profile: Optimisation under Fixed Schedule

We present a novel convex optimisation model for ship speed profile under varying environmental conditions, with fixed schedule the journey. To demonstrate efficacy of proposed method, combined was developed that employed an existing dynamic programming approach, along model. The tested 5 different ships 20 journeys from Houston, Texas to London Gateway, differing which were retrieved actual weather forecasts. As result, it shown both and approximately 22% more effective in developing fuel saving compared alone. Overall, average savings studied voyages 1.1% operation 3.5% where significant variance conditions present. Speed found be especially beneficial cases detrimental could avoided minor adjustments. Relaxation constraint likely leads larger but makes comparison virtually impossible as lower propulsion energy needed.
